Website speed is a product decision, not just a technical metric

How to prioritize mobile page speed, visual stability and responsive interactions around the actions your customers need to complete.

Measure the moments that matter

A fast homepage means little if a portfolio case study loads slowly or the contact form freezes after submission. Identify the pages that lead people toward an enquiry or purchase. Measure them on mobile and record where the wait happens: before content appears, when an image loads or after someone taps a control.

Fix the common bottlenecks

Serve images at an appropriate size and format. Load below-the-fold media only when needed. Reduce scripts that do not support the visitor's immediate task. Reserve space for images, videos and embeds so the page does not jump while loading.

Keep the experience usable before animation or enhancement code runs. Clear text, a visible call to action and a working form often matter more than another visual effect.

Make speed part of the workflow

Set a simple performance budget for important templates and test it before each release. Compare real visitor data with lab tests: lab results help find a problem, while field data shows how visitors actually experience the site. Recheck after adding new content, third-party tools or campaign pages.

Use the findings to prioritize work with the product and marketing teams. The useful question is which delay blocks a visitor from understanding the offer or completing the next step.
